City of God (2002 film) - Wikipedia

City of God (Portuguese: Cidade de Deus) is a 2002 Brazilian epic crime film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. The screenplay, written by Bráulio Mantovani, is adapted from the 1997 novel by Paulo Lins, though the plot is also loosely based on real events. City of God received widespread critical acclaim and earned four nominations at the 76th Academy Awards: Best Cinematography (César Charlone), Best Director (Meirelles), Best Film Editing (Daniel Rezende), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Mantovani). At the previous 75th Academy Awards, it was Brazil's submission for Best Foreign Language Film but was not selected as a finalist. On the bonus DVD, it is revealed that the only professional actor in the film was Matheus Nachtergaele, who played the supporting role of Carrot. Most of the remaining cast were from real-life favelas, and in some cases, even the real-life City of God favela itself. The film could not be part of the official selection because Walter Salles, one of the executive producers, was in the festival jury. In Brazil, City of God garnered the largest audience for a domestic film in 2002, with over 3.1 million tickets sold, and a gross of R$18.6 million ($10.3 million). The website's consensus reads, "City of God offers a shocking and disturbing—but always compelling—look at life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro." On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 79 out of 100 based on 33 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.

God’s Big Work in Small Towns - Enjoying the Journey

We are on the greatest work crew in the world - Christ is the Foreman. He is building His church in every place. God’s Big Work in Small Towns goes on! There are needy families, hurting souls, sin-broken lives, and hungry hearts in need of the gospel. As I left the church today, I rejoiced that this area has a strong gospel witness and was reminded that every small town in the world needs a local church holding up the truth and loving people. God does not bless a place because of its size. Our Lord Jesus was not born in the metropolis of Rome or the bustling activity of Jerusalem. The sovereign God did not choose to place His Son in the political or religious capitals of the day. Instead, He was sent to a town of what was estimated to be less than 500 residents.Bethlehem may have been a speck on the map, but it was the birthplace of the Saviour of the world! It is mentioned 20 times in 11 books of the Bible – a memorial to the significance of what God did in the small town.In our culture of “bigger is better,” it is often lost on us how God chooses to use little things for His glory. The prophet understood this principle when he asked, “For who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10). Capernaum was much larger than Bethlehem or Nazareth. Yet when Jesus made that fishing town of 1,500 his ministry headquarters, they rejected the light and condemned themselves (Matthew 11:23-25).

How this German town kept a promise to God for 400 years | CBC Radio

When the townspeople of Oberammergau, Germany promised God they would put on a Passion Play every decade, they were just hoping to be spared from a deadly plague. In the 400 years since, that tradition has brought people together from far and wide and holds lessons for every era in our world. In 1633, the town was hit by a plague that was ravaging parts of Europe, so they made a deal with God: spare their people from further death, and they would perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year.TapestryHow this German town kept a promise to God for 400 years

City God (China) - Wikipedia

A City God (Chinese: 城隍神; pinyin: Chénghuángshén; lit. 'god of the boundary'), is a tutelary deity in Chinese folk religion who is believed to protect the people and the affairs of the particular village, town or city of great dimension, and the corresponding location in the afterlife. Later, the term came to be applied to deified leaders from the town, who serve in authority over the souls of the deceased from that town, and intervene in the affairs of the living, in conjunction with other officials of the hierarchy of divine beings. City Gods are considered above tudigongs ('lords of local land'), which themselves are above landlord deities.Much as the ancient Indians, the ancient Sumerians, and the ancient Greeks did, the Chinese traditionally believed that guardian gods watched over cities. Chenghuangshen are believed to be involved in communal concerns such as the need for rain, and may be involved in personal requests such as recovery from illness. Town residents may appeal to the City God for help in a natural disaster or other crisis.People from both rural and urban areas come to pray to him or her, asking for specific favors. The most common favor requested in these prayers is good health. On the City God's birthday the people of the town or city have a great celebration (miaohui) to honor the City God.City God cults appeared over two millennia ago, and originally involved worship of a protective deity of a town's walls and moats.

Minakami Village | Fatal Frame Wiki | Fandom

Minakami Village (皆神村), also known as All God's Village, or The Lost Village, is the main setting in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly and the village in which the game takes place. While visiting their childhood playspot, Mio and Mayu enter the village after Mayu follows a red butterfly. All Gods Village is a deeply spiritual community with a high priest as its leader, secluded in a remote valley. They place high value in their ceremonies and rituals. The village is the home of a myth about a gateway to hell—a great chasm deep underground which leads to the world of the dead, or the Underworld. The valley and forest where the village once stood appears to be a vacation spot, since Mio and Mayu visited frequently as children. The area is slated to be submerged under a lake, which will form after the completion of the All God's Dam development project. At the end of the game, the successful completion of the Crimson Ritual releases many of the corrupted spirits, allowing them to escape the loop. Post-game, the valley where All God's Village was situated was flooded upon completion of the All God's Dam development project.
